The Rundown: A local sheriff tries to hold things together in a small town during the dust bowl.
It’s Oklahoma in the early 1930’s and the effects of both the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl are forcing people out of the small town of New Hope. The lack of water and prospects are forcing Jim to move his family further West in hopes of finding a life in California. The sheriff takes some time with them before discovering something in the dry land that gives him pause before he returns to the town.
Back in town, Sheriff Meadows finds himself fighting to hold the town together in the wake of both physical and social destruction as a pretty visitor catches his eye and another dust storm begins to move into the area.
The Story: Jones and Bram craft an engaging portrait of a dark moment in the history of the US. The story creates some great atmosphere and intriguing moments for its characters. While it does create some great atmosphere and interesting characters, the first issue only teases at something happening more interesting beneath the surface. I found myself intrigued by everything in the issue and look forward to seeing what happens next.
The Art: Jones’ art is spectacular. I love the visual style so much and how perfectly it captures the time and atmosphere of this story.
